Finding a good gluten free flour has got to be one of the top priorities when baking for someone on a gluten free diet! Basically, once you have your gluten free flour sorted, you can bake just about anything.
When Jamie first started a gluten free diet, I knew that one of the hardest things would be cutting out cakes and biscuits – not because he ate loads of them, but because they go so well in lunchboxes, and as after school snacks and of course at parties. I did look at the selection of gluten free cakes and biscuits available to buy but although some of them tasted good, the prices were very high for them to be anything more than an occasional treat.
I was really lucky at that stage not to know that a lot of gluten free flour tastes revolting. I have tried baking with a few brands since and had nowhere near as good results, but I discovered ‘Dove’s Farm’ gluten free self raising flour in my local supermarket on my first visit to the gluten free section and have been using it ever since – with superb results. Most people cannot tell it’s gluten free. They also do a plain flour, which when added to a teaspoon of xanthum gum, also produces good results.

Where-ever in the world you live, please don’t give up baking after your first few attempts. Searching for a good gluten free flour is the key. And if you have found any other brands that really work (particularly in the U.S.) please comment and let us know!
As for me, I’m sticking to Dove’s Farm. And, no, I am not on any commission from them – I just think they have provided a wonderful product there and Jamie and I are very grateful.
