Four Month Celiac Review

Posted in: General

Jamie saw the paediatrician for his four month review today.  He had a blood test two weeks ago (which was much better than the first one because they did put the numbing cream on, although he still got very stressed.)

Today was to be weighed and measured, get the results of the blood test and generally see how he was doing.   The blood test would show whether we had managed to cut gluten out of his diet or not, because if he was still having gluten the antibody levels would be high.  No cheating on a gluten free diet!  They can tell!  I have to admit I did feel slightly stressed about it.  I think as a Mom it’s really down to me whether he was having a gluten free diet or not, and I would have felt awful if the blood tests had showed he was still getting gluten from somewhere, despite all my efforts!

Anyway, the blood test results were good.  The antibody levels were at 37 just before he was diagnosed as celiac and they are supposed to be below 3.  Today’s test showed they were at 1.7  (Do I know what those fgures really mean?  Not a clue.  But They sounded pretty positive!!)  His iron levels are also good and he is putting on weight slowly.

Jamie’s usual attempts to have oats re-instated into his diet failed again.  He was asked about his energy levels and said that he does get tired sometimes… but when he explained that he does tennis on a Monday, triathlon training on Tuesday, gym Wednesday and Friday, swimming Thursday and Saturday… she decided that he had energy enough.

So it was a positive review, and I feel better for knowing that his system is now completely gluten free.  The ongoing challenge is to keep it like that.
