A Gluten Free Christmas: Make Your Own Gluten Free Christmas Hamper

Posted in: Gluten free Christmas

Have you thought of getting a gluten free Christmas hamper for someone this Christmas?

There are some really nice gluten free Christmas hampers out there to buy… if you can afford them.  Alternatively, have you thought of making your own?  It is really not that difficult.

Since Jamie (my nine year old son) was diagnosed with celiac disease this summer, and having a husband who is definitely wheat intolerant and probably also celiac,  I have a new appreciation of how many delicious foods  -  which most people take for granted - have gluten in them.

What better Christmas present could you give someone who is celiac or wheat intolerant than  hamper full of gluten free Christmas goodies that they can enjoy without worrying about.

Start with a suitable sized basket: better a small one overflowing than a big one with not much in it.  If you are on a budget, cover a cardboard box with Christmas wrapping paper.

Select some goodies to go in it:

  • Wine is naturally gluten free
  • Jams, pickles and marmalades are usually gluten free but check the labels
  • Chocolate and confectionary are always good, but again check the labels.  It is nice to have a few individual sweets/chocolates (wrapped) dotted around the basket.  Posh chocs if you are going for the sophisticated look and candy canes if you are not!

You might also want to bake some gluten free cookies or even a gluten free Christmas cake.  For someone who cannot have most of the cookies and cakes from the shops, this would be a really welcome gift!  Wrap your home made cookies or cake in clear cellophane and top with a huge Christmas bow.  Some gluten free Christmas cookie recipes are coming up in the next couple of weeks.

To make your hamper/basket look really good, get hold of some shredded tissue paper in christmassy colours to line your basket with.  Make sure you have items of different heights and sizes, and if not, pile things on top of each other to make height.

Once you are happy with the look of your basket, make sure it is secure (use glue dots where necessary) and wrap the whole basket in clear cellophane, finishing off with a huge Christmas bow.

A welcome gift for anyone!
